Christianity Today apologizes for ‘son-in-law’ job posting

(RNS) The flagship evangelical magazine Christianity Today has tweeted an apology after publishing a job listing for a son-in-law that raised some eyebrows on social media.

The ad, which ran in the March edition, was bought by an unnamed Chicagoland church elder who is based in Wheaton, Ill., the magazine’s longtime home.

Apparently referring to the daughter he wanted to find a husband for, the church elder described “her” as a “godly, gorgeous, athletic, educated, careered, humorous, traveled, bilingual, 26-year-old virgin” and included a link to her blog.

Mark Galli, editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, apologized in a statement on Friday (March 4) posted as an image to the magazine’s Twitter account.

“We at Christianity Today apologize for publishing a personal ad in our Marketplace section that has been rightly seen as demeaning and in poor taste,” Galli said.

“We want everything in our magazine to reflect beautiful orthodoxy, and this ad did not. We have taken a hard look at our ad review process, made some changes, and we can assure our readers no ad like this will appear again.”

  • “We want everything in our magazine to reflect beautiful orthodoxy…”

What is more genuinely orthodox an Biblical than treating your daughter like chattel property to be sold off to a suitor? Especially playing up virginity as a feature an commodity being marketed.

This is simply a matter of saying out loud behavior and ideas which are generally accepted in the group, but not said explicitly. The method is criticized but I sincerely doubt the sentiment is.

  • “Daddy! Of course I’m a Virgin!”

    Or my name isn’t Bristol!

    Creepy. creepy. Creepy!

  • We have a 2 millennia old religion which has perpetuated the even-older notion that women are mere property to be bartered by the men in their lives. We have a classified ad in a Christian magazine which is a natural ramification of this philosophy (in spite of the fact that this is the 21st century, not the 1st). Yet, said magazine apologizes for it and expects the rest of us just to look away and reach no conclusions about it? I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m not stupid enough to do that.

  • After two decades of being a stringer for CT in Europe, I was amazed at this ad. Thanks to Editor Mark Galli for setting the record straight.

  • Personally, as one of those homos, as you so charmingly put it, I think the moral, human, and intellectual knots antigay Christians are willing to tie themselves up with are just hilarious.

They are so funny, they make me laugh to be an atheist.

  • Who care she actually sounds like a decent woman with an old fashioned father.BIG DEAL..

  • unfortunately there are those Christians who have fallen prey to legalism, patriarchy and other cults that follow “man’s rules”. They think they are pleasing God and He will bless them. True Christianity is a relationship with God based on Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. True, there are certain morals given in the bible but beyond that how one dresses, eats or raises their family is between them and God. and I guarantee you, a real Christian family following the leading of the Holy Spirit will NOT look like a patriarchy or treat their daughters like chattel. GOD DOES NOT MAKE COOKIE CUTTER CHRISTIANS!

  • What is wrong for asking for what you want for your son or daughter who is entering the ministry apparently. Today we expect little and usually get what we expect! In my time it wasn’t to hard to get what this dad wanted, especially in the virgin area. But, then that was 50+ years ago, Oh, did I mention that I have been married to the same great wife for over 50 years and have 5 children 12 grandchildren and even a couple of great grandchildren. There is something to be said for a Christian life and a great God and a great Lord and Savior for these many years.

  • Jack Giametti, anyone who is not a misogynist jerk member of the Christian Taliban or Muslim cares, because women are human beings with human rights, at least here in the United States, NOT property owned by their husbands or fathers, and a woman’s value as a human being does NOT decrease due to having sex. The other commenters hit the issue right on the nose – you should read what they said, and even the editor of the magazine was forced to admit that the ad was “demeaning.” The father who placed the ad is not “old fashioned” – he is a misogynist jerk who is objectifying his own daughter and attempting to sell her and her virginity to another man, as things he believes he owns, It’s beyond demeaning, it’s utterly disgusting and sick.

  • I have all of these things also, married 56 years, great kids, successful kids, great, wonderful grand children too, without being a church goer. I am a LIBERAL!

  • Love this ( :

I have none of those things ~ I chose not to marry or procreate so that I could focus my energy on preserving the habitat that all of your offspring will require, that evil men try to destroy.

I, too, am a liberal! And I worship the Goddess! xo
